Introduction

Proper positioning and swiping of the finger are the key elements for proper generation the fingerprint image.

Upon capturing a fingerprint image, the ekey scanner looks for the top knuckle area of the finger to be recognized. The larger the swiped fingerprint area, the better for the system to recognize the fingerprint

although using the ekey scanner is very simple, the below explanation amid at providing new users good understanding of the fingerprint capturing and swiping process.

What is a Fingerprint?

Fingerprint Ridges

A fingerprint consists of ridges that contain pores separated by valleys.

Each fingerprint is unique, even fingers of the same hand or identical twins do not have identical fingerprints.

A mature fingerprint maintains its shape and patterns throughout the person's life; even after an injury it re-grows to its original shape.

ekey Fingerprint Sensor

There are many different technologies (optical, capacitive, radio, pressure, microelectro-mechanical and thermal) to capture and generate an image of fingerprint electronically.

Atmel Fingerchip

ekey considers thermal as the most promising technology for its applications. ekey scanner are equipped with Atmel FingerChip (silicon thermal sensor.)

The ekey scanner sensor is robust, resistant to normal applied pressure, and is qualified for at least one million finger swipes.

ekey scanner thermal sensor measures the temperature differential between the sensor pixels that are in contact with the fingerprint ridges and those under the valleys, that are not in contact.

The combination of thermal image capture and a swiping method gives ekey scanner sensor the following benefits:

  • passive operation where a finger swiping is required to generate the image
  • reliable functionality over a wide range of environmental conditions
  • self-cleaning with no latent print remains on it after a scan provides good security against artificial fingertips or the re-use of latent images.

fingerprint Image / Template

The ekey scanner sensor captures the image of a fingerprint in sections as the finger is swiped vertically downward over the sensor. Sections are combined by the software to generate an image of (500DPI) the whole fingerprint.

finger template animation

The generated image is analyzed for pattern recognition to extract 30-40 minutiae for building a template that represents the original fingerprint image.

The probability of two different fingerprints having identical templates is extremely low.

The fingerprint image is disregarded after the template is generated. The fingerprint image cannot be re-constructed from the template.

Best Practice in Swiping a Finger

finger top Knuckle

Top knuckle of any finger is the area that is measured when swiped over the sensor.

finger swipe animation
  1. Place the finger flat in white area over the sensor (between the two green lights)

  2. Align the tip of the finger with top of the white area

  3. Do not press too hard

  4. Try to feel the sensor heat

  5. Swipe the finger at a constant and a medium speed all the way over the sensor

  6. The larger the swiped fingerprint area, the better for the system to recognize the fingerprint
